In my opinion, outside of coleslaw, fried is the best way serve up cabbage.

A few years ago we grew our own cabbage in our garden in Georgia. That was the sweetest cabbage I have ever had. Just thinking about that cabbage makes me want to start a garden here in Illinois. For now the grocery store will have to do.

Southern Fried Cabbage Recipe Tips

  1. Once the bacon is cooked DO NOT drain the bacon grease. You need the bacon fat to cook the cabbage.
  2. Slice your cabbage and onion thin. You want thin slices to cook to a tender texture. No big chunks!
  3. Your pot with cabbage and onion will be nearly over flowing. Don’t worry the cabbage and onion will cook down to half the size. It will be a little difficult to toss while cooking but after a few minutes the volume will decrease.
  4. When cooking toss the cabbage pulling from the bottom up. This will coat the cabbage with bacon grease for perfect frying. Continue to toss pulling from the bottom up. Cabbage will start to reduce in size. Cook until you get your desired tenderness.
  5. Serve your Southern Fried Cabbage along side some cornbread, pinto beans, fried chicken and candied sweet potatoes.
  6. Once your Southern Fried Cabbage has cooked down, tender, and ready to serve you can add butter the cabbage for extra flavor. Toss butter into your pot until it is melted. Start with half a stick of butter then add more to taste.
  7. If you want a spicy kick add in a 1/2 teaspoon of red pepper flakes.
