Black Russian Shots with a coffee rim.

What makes a Black Russian? All you need is two ingredients: Vodka and Kahlua. I recommend using your brands of choice. The coffee and vodka pack a punch and the coffee grinds add a textured finish. You can get a set of these gorgeous shot glasses and enjoy.

You can also spice it up with by swapping out plain vodka for flavored vodkas such as Vanilla or Whipped or swapping out Kahlua for other coffee liqueurs.  Alternatively, make it dessert! Mix shot and pour over ice cream and sprinkle coffee grinds on top! Increase ingredients to make a Black Russian Cocktail and serve over ice in an old-fashioned glass. You can also turn this into a Black Russian cocktail recipe, similar to my Chocolate White Russian Cocktail, by serving it over ice in a traditional old-fashioned glass. If you make the Black Russian into a cocktail add a splash of coke to add some fizzy goodness.

And if you are looking for an interesting shot number two, try out these vodka-based white tea shots or gummy bear shots.

This recipe is great for an after-dinner cocktail or nightcap.

Directions to Make a Black Russian Shot

Make the Coffee Rim

If you opt for the coffee rim then you will need to grind some coffee beans. Place coffee grinds onto a plate. Dip the top of your shot glass into some water then into the coffee grinds.

Brush off any excess amounts of coffee grinds so you have a nice thin layer. Nobody wants a mouth full of grinds.

Make the Black Russian

Next, in an ice-filled cocktail shaker add in the Kahlua and Vodka. Shake until the shaker is chilled.

Strain into your coffee-rimmed shot glass and bottoms up!

Tips for an Awesome Black Russian!

  • Store your vodka and Kahlua in the freezer for ultra-smooth sipping. No freezer space? Shake with ice and strain like a pro.
  • Even if your ingredients are chilled, shaking with ice helps marry the flavors and add a slight dilution for smoothness.
