Ingredients for Homemade Guacamole

  • Avocados – The star of the show! Use ripe, creamy Hass avocados for the perfect texture and rich flavor
  • Guacamole seasoning mix packet – A convenient blend of spices that adds just the right amount of zest, heat, and depth. These packets are typically found in the produce section. You can find other brands, like Ortega and McCormick in the seasoning section of your grocery store.
  • Red Onion – Adds a mild bite and a bit of crunch, balancing out the creamy avocados.
  • Roma TomatoesThe best tomatoes for Guacamole are Roma tomatoes. Firm and less watery than other varieties, Roma tomatoes are ideal for guacamole. They add color and fresh, juicy flavor without making the guac soggy. If you want guacamole without tomatoes just omit this ingredient.
  • Jalapenos – Bring the heat! Add more or less depending on how spicy you like your guacamole.
  • Sour Cream – A creamy ingredient that mellows the heat and gives the guac a smooth, velvety finish.
  • Cilantro – Bright and herby, cilantro adds a pop of freshness that makes the flavors sing. If you do not like the taste of cilantro, you can omit it to have guacamole without cilantro.
  • Limes – Fresh lime juice adds tang, balances the richness of the avocado, and helps prevent browning.

How to Make this Simple Homemade Guacamole

Making fresh guacamole at home is quick and easy with just a few flavorful ingredients. Start by adding peeled and pitted avocados to a mixing bowl. Use a potato masher or fork to mash them to your desired texture—chunky or smooth. Next, stir in the guacamole seasoning mix, diced red onion, chopped Roma tomatoes, minced jalapeños, sour cream, fresh cilantro, and a generous squeeze of lime juice. Mix until well combined, then cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours to let the flavors meld. Serve chilled with tortilla chips or your favorite Mexican dishes.

Tips for Making the Best Simple Homemade Guacamole

  • Save an Avocado Pit – Placing one of the avocado seeds in the finished guacamole can help slow browning. It’s an old trick that, along with proper storage, keeps your guac looking fresh longer.
  • Use Roma Tomatoes for Less Water and More Flavor – Roma tomatoes are ideal for guacamole because they’re firm and less watery. For the best texture, slice them in half and use a melon baller or ½ teaspoon to scoop out the seeds before dicing.
  • Keep the Jalapeño Seeds for Extra Heat – Want a spicier kick? Leave the seeds in the jalapeño when chopping to turn up the heat in your guac.
  • Check the Heat Level on Your Guacamole Seasoning Mix Packets – When grabbing a seasoning packet at the store, be sure to check if it’s labeled mild or hot so you get the flavor profile you’re aiming for.

How long is Homemade Guacamole good for?

Homemade guacamole is best enjoyed fresh, but you can store it in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. To keep it as green and flavorful as possible:

  • Stir before serving – Guacamole may separate slightly in the fridge. Give it a quick stir to revive the texture.
  • Add an avocado seed – Placing one of the avocado pits in the center of the dip can help slow down browning.
  • Use plastic wrap to minimize air exposure – Press a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole before sealing the container. This barrier reduces oxidation and keeps your guac looking fresh.
