If you are like me, you enjoy squirrels in your garden. Offering them food is the best way to keep these little visitors coming back to your yard. But what to feed the squirrels?
They love nuts and corn. You can purchase bags of squirrel food in the same stores that sell bird seed. In addition, you can make treats with ingredients from your pantry.
If you feed birds then the squirrels are probably feasting on your bird seed. In the past, I have tried to separate the birds and squirrels by putting their food in different locations. What I found was that the squirrels were eating the bird’s food and the birds were eating the squirrel’s food. So now I just mix their food. The birds and squirrels eat in harmony and if it doesn’t bother them why let it bother you? With that being said, birds will eat these cookies too.
Here is my cookie recipe for the squirrels (and birds). This is a nice treat for the squirrels and will steer them away from eating birdseed for the rest of the day.
Squirrel Cookies
A snack for the neighborhood squirrels.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons peanut butter (crunchy or creamy)
- 2 tablespoons uncooked oats
- 2 tablespoons finely chopped walnuts (or any nut you have)
- 1 tablespoon yellow cornmeal
Instructions
- In a small bowl microwave peanut butter for 20 seconds.
- Add in oats, nuts, and cornmeal and stir till well-mixed.
- Use a 1/4 teaspoon and scoop out the mixture.
- Place cookies on wax paper.
- Let cool.
- Place on a platform feeder.
Notes
Do not place it in direct sunlight.
Do not put out cookies in high temperatures.
The peanut butter will melt.
Instead of little cookie balls, you can press the mixture into a shallow bowl.
*pictured below birds will eat these cookies too.
Chop your nuts into small pieces. I like using the crumbs at the bottom of the bag of nuts.
