Bloody Molly (Irish Bloody Mary Cocktail Recipe)

Bloody Molly is a classic Bloody Mary but with Irish Whiskey. This cocktail brings a delightful Irish twist to the beloved brunch staple. Whether you’re looking to start your St. Patrick’s Day on a festive note or seeking the perfect hangover cure the next morning, this Bloody Molly recipe has you covered.

Bloody Molly

While the exact origins of the Bloody Molly are debated, it’s believed that whiskey enthusiasts began swapping vodka for Irish whiskey to create a heartier, richer version of the classic. Today, the Bloody Molly has secured its place as a brunch favorite, especially among whiskey lovers.

If you love exploring different variations of this cocktail, you might also enjoy the bourbon-infused Bourbon Bloody Mary or the tequila-based Bloody Maria. Each offers a unique twist on the classic, but the Bloody Molly stands out with its rich, whiskey-forward flavor.

The Bloody Molly is best served with an Irish-inspired brunch that serves sausage, fried eggs, baked beans, bacon (called rashers in Ireland), black pudding, and hashbrowns.

We love Irish Whiskey! We made a big batch of homemade Bloody Mary Mix and brunch was a blast and full of laughs.

Ingredients for a Bloody Molly Cocktail  Recipe

Making a Bloody Mary with Irish Whiskey is no different than making the classic Bloody Mary. The only change is the liquor. Gather your ingredients. You are about to make the best Bloody Molly cocktail. You’ll need tomato juice  – the best tomato juice for a Bloody Molly is R.W. Knudsen Tomato Juice. Then, you’ll need celery, salt, black pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and some good old tabasco!

Though its optional, I enjoy a fresh Lemon wedge squeezed into my Bloody Mary instead of the lemon juice mixed in. It just hits differently.

Choosing the Right Whiskey:

The best Irish Whiskey for Bloody Molly is Redbreast 12 year or Jameson. We don’t recommend putting in your most expensive Irish Whiskey since it will be blended with spices and tomato juice for this cocktail.

I use this whiskey in my bourbon whiskey sour, my classic old fashioned, Irish Cream Frappuccino, and even in my Brown Butter Colcannon with Irish Whiskey!

What Garnish to Choose for Your Bloody Molly?

The garnishes on a Bloody Molly are just as delicious as the drink. Mix and Match any combination of garnishes from the list below for your Bloody Molly Cocktail.

Keep the celery long and secure garnishes together with a cocktail pick.

My Favorite Garnishes:

  • Celery
  • Olives – The best olives for a Bloody Molly are green olives. Choose either pimento, cheese, or garlic-stuffed green olives to add extra flavor to your garnish ensemble.
  • Cherry or Grape tomatoes
  • Hot Peppers
  • Lemon
  • Rosemary
  • Dill
  • Bacon
  • Shrimp
  • Oysters – On the side not in the drink.
  • Salt & Pepper for the rim.
  • Bloody Mary Rim Salt (salt, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder)
  • Old Bay for the rim.

Directions to Make Irish Bloody Whiskey

To make this Bloody Mary with whiskey you will need a highball glass or any tall glass will do.

  • If you want a salted rim crack salt and pepper on a small plate. Take your lemon and rim your glass. Press your glass into the cracked salt and pepper to rim the glass. You do not have to rim the whole glass you can just do one side, or omit it altogether.
  • Next, In a cocktail shaker add Irish Whiskey, tomato juice, celery salt, black pepper, Worcestershire, and Tabasco sauce with enough ice for your glass.
  • Shake to really get those seasonings mixed through.
  • Pour into your highball and garnish! We do not recommend straining because you will lose some of your seasonings.
