FAQ for Making Sweet Potato Hash
Can I use other sausage instead of chicken apple sausage?
Yes! Turkey sausage, beef sausage, or even a plant-based sausage will work in this recipe. Just be sure it’s fully cooked before adding it to the skillet. Check out my kale soup with sausage for details on cooking beef sausage and my cabbage and noodles recipe on cooking pork sausage.
What type of apples work best?
Gala apples add a mild sweetness, but Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Pink Lady apples are also great choices. Use what you have on hand.
Can I make this ahead of time?
Yes! This breakfast hash stores well in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in a skillet with a drizzle of oil to crisp everything back up.
Can I freeze sweet potato hash?
Absolutely. Store in an airtight container for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge, then reheat on the stove for best results.
What can I serve with this hash?
It’s delicious on its own, but topping with a fried egg or serving alongside homemade bread makes it even more filling. We even used leftovers as a side to our slow cooker sirloin steak dinner.
